If one side is loose and the other one is tight, maybe you just crushed one of the bushings?

Aftermarket companies offer needle bearing to replace the bushings, but I think I would avoid using them just because rust is
going to be inevitable.

Are you sure the freeplay is coming from your A-arm and not the wheel bearings?
