sportsman 500, 2004 model, when in 2 wheel drive, if I spin the rear wheels and it locks itself into 4 wheel drive mode even with the switch off. I have checked gear oil, switch and the indicator light shows that it is off. Does not have 4 wheel drive hubs has locking front diffential.[/b]

I couldn't tell you other than I would think its a faulty switch (internally). If you can't figure it out, take it to the dealer. I'm sure they have run into just about every scenario before. I always keep mine in 4x4 mode as it will use 2wheel drive all the time and only kick in 4x4 when wheels spin. Its automatic and I don't have to think about it. I think the only reason to flip the switch to 2x4 mode would be if you want to get the quad sideways in mud or snow and fool around.

Yes I like fooling around and acting crazy so this has taken some of the fun out of it. I was trying to bypass the dealer since they seem to take their sweet time.. Thanks for the info!
