I know this is a pretty old thread but I saw it and thought I would reply. I have had a AC diesel for a little over a year and I love it. It is not fast by any stretch of the imagination but torque, it has plenty. I did a report on tuning the diesel engine on my site and this really does wonders for the power. tuning the injectors really turns up the fun factor. It handles good on trails but don't try to race anyone because it isn't built for that. A turbo is a possibility but consider water splashing on a hot turbo. Going with a naturally aspirated induction is probably the best bet. Top speed is 45 mph and is controlled by a governor. Here is a link to my report. I hope it's ok to post a link to my site. Not trying to steal users, just provide the report.
