In the past here in NJ many riders of euro bikes and some other brands would register their bikes without much hassle. that has ended. As of now NJ requires the bike to be fully legal from the OEM. What that means is the Ktm's, Gas Gas', Tm's, etc. are all illegal and will not get a plate. Only the Husky TE models and the regular D/S bikes from japan will be registered. Be carefull if you buy a new one or a used one because they are denying the registrations. Even if you get a title from out of state on a used one they will probably deny it. So far from what I understand the earlier ones which slid through will be ok but I am not sure on that also.

All the guys that did the out-of-state titling of their bikes should be somewhat concerned. There's no garantee these machines will retain their highway-registered status if NJ DMV starts using the VIN number to distinguish off-road vehicles from highway-approved vehicles.

If you went the path of a reconstruct title and made up your own VIN number, then I'd think you have nothing, at all, to worry about.

In either case, it's probably all a bunch of since your chance of getting creamed by a car on a dirt-converted-to-street-bike is probably the same as any other street-only bike out there. There's not a hell of a lot of safety driving a mototrcycle on the streets of NJ no matter how you look at it.

I bought my bike with a NJ title from the first owner. I think one of the reasons for this is because bikes like mine do not come with any emissions crap on them like an xr 650l which is made for street use from the factory, all in all i think its bs. Just another NJ scam.

I dont understand how they can distinguish once you have it registered in another state. Where is this information coming from?

This is what I heard from 2 dealers. The State got ahold of a list of non epa compliant bikes. There evidentally is something in the vin# which identifies them as such. They also have a list of brands and models such as KTM300Exc or Honda Crf250x which sets off the bells and whistles. If you purchased a bike form out of stat with a title OR if you moved to NJ with a out of state titled bike which is on the list they will NOT issue you anything unless you have pictures including epa compliance stickers. Supposedly you can also have the state police sign off on it but that is next to impossible, they are too busy catching speeders. Also they know if your bike is epa legal or not. So far I have heard of at least 30 purchasers of new and used bikes being turned away. Right now the state seems to be renewing older registrations but that may change as well. They renewed several friends of mine and mine as well. Now here is the thing. If you can get your bike state inspected I am reasonably sure that they must renew you. that is what I am trying for.

Interesting..

I'll be able to report back in a week on this issue...I pick up my new bike next weekend....I personally called DMV in trenton, explainned to them the scenario, and they said as long as it has a title, and it doesn't say "Off-Road" anywhere, there shouldn't be a problem...We'll see...my fingers are crossed...
