Ex-officer in park shooting appears in court
(06/11/07) HACKENSACK – A state parks police officer appeared in court Monday in connection to the shooting death of a man at Ringwood State Park.
Former officer Chad Walden allegedly shot and killed Emil Mann, a member of the Ramapough Lenape Indian Tribe, on April 1, 2006. The shooting apparently stemmed from an argument over the use of ATVs at the park. Walden claims the gunfire was an act of self-defense.
Walden was indicted on charges of reckless manslaughter in the incident. He did not make any comments upon his exit from the courthouse Monday. During the court appearance, a status hearing was scheduled for August. No trial date has been set.
