For anyone curious about buying a GPS unit, hopefully this will steer you closer to buying one. Both of the units below have every feature you could want in a GPS for ATVing. You will not be disappointed with either of these machines.

$189 Garmin eTrex Venture Cx Expandable Color Hand Held

$319 Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx Expandable Color Hand Held GPS Receiver

They both are waterproof, have color screens, allow you to mark waypoints, and record your tracks... which is crucial for off-road navigation. They also will allow you to save data to your computer for safe keeping and to share with others. The more expensive unit pans through maps faster, but they otherwise function exactly the same. The included MapSource software allows you to edit the data and superimpose it over Google Earth aerial photos of the land (for free $).

I had the garmin foretrex 201 before and it is water proof but ended up goin thru th ewash after a muddy ride in my pants pocket accidentally so yeah its not water proof for the spin cycle lol. I just bought a new magellan explorist 400. Its got everything they have minus the color screen and it comes with software for geocaching of the internet. Which will work well. I paid 235 for it.

I have one of the Garmin Rino 2-way radio/GPS units and love it! Very rugged and durable. Color would be nice - maybe for my next purchase...

If you look, Garmin offers 7/8" (standard bars) and 1.25" (taper bars) bar mounts.

I have the 60csx, got it from Sam's Club online for $350. If you belong to Sam's Club, you'll know that their return policy is basically forever so that's why I bought it from them. I love it so far, but need the handlebar mount because it's a bit big for the pocket...

Does anybody know if you can somehow make trail maps and upload them to a Garmin? For example, if we made a trail map of the Lost Trails park, could we post it and everybody be able to download it? That would be really cool but I'm still just learning about all this stuff...

Congrats on the 60csx. Checkout my post on new Garmin GPS owner advice.

You definitely can do all those things. Use your GPS to record "tracks" and save them. You can then share the file as you would with any file.
