I can't comment on the Magellan, but I love my Garmin GPSMAP60csx.

It has been abused a lot this year, out in the rain, in the thick dust of quad fest, and really deep woods.

I never lost signal. I use the Ram mount and hardwire kit on the bike. I do know I can get at least 2 full rides out of the batteries too.

I highly recommend it.

I have the Magellan Explorist 600 gps with the handlebar mount and I love this unit. It has saved my butt a few times from getting lost.
Magellan makes a great product.

That looks like it would be great for your tow vehicle, but I doubt it's durable enough for use on your ATV. If it's not water proof, will you be willing to use it to get you back home if it starts raining?

That unit is more designed for driving rather than the woods. Your GPS should be able to show TOPO. The 4040 is not designed for the terrian, they do make a motorcycle verision to which does have topo. Remember you are going off road not pavement. The 4040 is designed to enter an address and take you there door to door. A topo GPS allows you mark your trail and back track.
