I have a question to anyone who may have sold a quad in NJ. Im selling my quad and the guy who's buying it is from out of state and tells me that I should have a title if I ever registered my quad. I have not registered it and do not have anything more than a Certificate of Origin. If you go to DMV here in Jersey and pay for registration do you get a regular title in your name that can be signed and filled out for the new buyer? Do you just get a registration card that you transfer into the new buyers name? Or do you just sign the Certificate of Origin and the new buyer takes that to his out of state dmv and if that state issues titles then he gets one?
Hope this doesnt sound too confusing and someone can help me out asap because this guy wants it Saturday and that only leaves me 2 days to get the registration and title mess fixed at dmv.

I went through a very similar "incident". If you do have the Cert. of Origin you can give that to the purchaser and he will be able to register that vehicle in any state. In NJ, when you register an ATV, trailer, etc... you will only have the registration card to pass along to the buyer. NJDMV does not issue a new title for ATV's, trailers, etc.... The registration card acts as your proof of ownership, just went through this with a quad i just sold. hope this helps you out.

Do I absolutly have to register the quad just to give the guy the registration so he can get a title in another state? Or is my Certificate of origin enough? I dont see anywhere on there for me to sign it over to him. Only on the bottom where it says seller sig. under the odometer statement.

A certificate of origin is a legal document that is accepted at all DMVS in the US. You must however include some kind of Bill of Sale showing the transfer of ownership from yourself to the new buyer to make the sale legal in several states. (plus if it ever turns up somewhere it shouldn't the police will not be knocking on your door)

Definitely include some type of handwritten or typed Bill of Sale with the purchase. If you are able to, have it notorized as well. It may sound like overkill but trust me, I just went through this with DMV and it was hell. And to your question as to whether or not you must register the quad, the answer is no in NJ. There is no law on the books that requires you to register your ATV, unless of course you are riding on land that requires you to do so.

Went to DMV today and found out exactly what you've all been saying. The Cert. of Origin is all he needs to title it in his state. But it must be signed by me in front of a notery and be stamped. I called the notery at my bank and she said she will do it and noterize a hand written bill of sale. I plan on making copies of everything for my personal records just in case.
Now I hope everything goes smoothly with the sale.
