ok guys i know this will be hard without seeing anything, but i noticed the s10 making a knocking sound. i cant really explain it but it sounds like metal on metal and taping is constant, not random. i never took notice but the knocks are like 1-2 secs apart. i noticed it today and i pulled over check all the fluids, the oil was very sheet brown looking but i havnt changed it in 5000 miles. but everything was filled. i get back in and pull alway and still knocking, i turn off my heat to see if its that, and after about 10 secs it stops. it stopped making the noise after that, i dunno if it was just luck or what.......i dunno what it was but from the sound of it, i dont think that will be the end of it. u could really hear it from the driver side wheel well. it happened at idle and gets louder with more gas given. dunno if it has anything to do with it but my lower intake gasket it leaking.

any ideas? just dont tell me she needs a new engine 85k miles she is too young to die

If the knock is engine speed related the bottom end may be toast. Intake gaskets will start leaking internal when people put off fixing them causing coolant to mix with engine oil and washing out the bearings, makes the lifters get all funky too. change the oil and if the noise doesnt go away start saving lots of money. maybe the noise your hearing is just a lifter tap which usually happens first when they start to milk shake. Without hearing it its hard to say.

good luck!

if its just a lifter tap from a little coolant getting in the oil you may be able to save it. replace the gasket and change the oil, more than once if you have to to get it all squeaky clean again and see what happens. You could even try running some of that engine flush in it and then changing the oil too but if the gaskets leaking it will happen all over again. I would suggest taking it to someone to get it fixed before its too late.

yep man u were right was in shop all day today for otherthings and after intake fixed and oil changed still making that noise and they said it was the lifters and they have to take it apart. dunno if they are going to be honest about it but he said all he might have to do is remove em and clean em.

I wouldnt throw in the towel just yet,try and get some of that motor flush from the parts store, follow the directions on the back of the can and then change the oil again, maybe a can of lucas additive with the fresh oil and see what happens. btw, just removing them again means taking the intake back off, along with both valve covers, rocker arms,etc........

if its does have to come apart again I would suggest new lifters, they are usually not that expensive

they said they removed the intake today and shock something by hand which they said is a bad lifter and something else (cylinder? i forget) said they changed oil 2 times today. recemmened me allowing them to take apart the engine and find out the true answer. i asked them to do a engine flush and they are going to put syn oil in this time. so hopefully it will work. my question is when i pick it up after the flush, its ok if its still making the noise right? im epecting it too still be making it and after some driving it will go alway? or am i wroung? remember it started making the noise sat night.....sun it stopped making it and i drove it till weds when i dropped it off with out hearing another peep. then they said when they got done the intake and started it it started doing it again

ok so the intakes off and they are changing the bad lifters. no reason for it to still make noise, unless the bottom end is wasted but that wouldnt have been an intermittent noise before you dropped it off???

Im guessing you tried to save money by not taking it to the dealer but will probably end up costing you more in the long run,lol good luck matt

nope they are not replacing the lifters.....i just said they told me they re-took the intake off today and checked some things and found something loose??? which most likely means bad lifters???, but they wanted my permission to take apart the engine to make sure. when i talked to them at 5pm and it was put together so i dont really know what they did. im not even sure they did anything today.....all they are doing tomorrow is doing an engine flush and replacing the oil with synthic and letting me drive it around town and seeing if it goes alway. this is after i told him it was fine all weekend.....he said if thats the case i might get luckly with a engine flush as you said too. i really forget but i think he said he thinks one of the lifters fell over or something and thats whats causing the noise? i dont know feck this stuff.

trust me if i knew a leaking intake on the outside could also leak inside i would of taken it asap. but i just thought it was a simple coolent leak.
