Just hung up the phone w/ my buddy.. He just got home from the hospital, He was out for a nice ride today with his kids at "my local spot" and almost lost his head ... for real !!
It seems someone boobytrapped a trail with a wire running across and he caught it , Took off his helmet, knocked out some teeth and left several wounds that needed to be stitched up.
Now the first question is ... what is it he can do ?? It was by a horse farm, So does he go to the farmer and kick up some sheet .. go to the police .. or what ?
Granted he was riding illegal.. but this was totally insane ..
EDIT :
Taking offers on the following .....
2004 Kawasaki 700 vforce.. needs minor tlc
2005 E-ton Viper 150.. near mint
2006 Kawasaki 250 Bayou.. near mint
Riding in this shithole of a state is over for me , And driving 3 hrs. to ride just sucks..
Going to take up knitting

Here's what I'm thinking, I had horses myself once, and if someone strung wire low enough to catch an ATV riders helmet, that would be the same height as a horse's nose. A horse's nose is very soft and delicate, if someone sliced my horse's nose, I'd be lookin to kill someone. I'd approach the farm owner and see what they had to say. If nothing else, play dumb and warn the folks there to watch out so their horses don't get hurt. Beyond that, I heard it's illegal to set a trap like that, even on your own property. Call a lawyer, someone could have died here.

Holy cow! Trespassing is one thing, but inflicting bodily harm as a means to protect your land? .
Strictly from an injury standpoint, he has some healing to do, hopefully insurance somehow covers it. If this wire was across a "trail", horse or ATV, it was meant to stop something (and boy did it).
But, does he get labeled the bad apple we all talk about? The one who rides illegal. gets hurt, tries sueing, and nearly gets killed doin it? Isnt this the guy we all yell at, sues the landowner.... even though 80% or better continue to ride illegally... ?

This isnt the first time I have seen this kinda thing happen. A kid I rode dirt bikes with back in like 82/83 was killed this same way. We rode in an old quarry in the town of Montville I believe, and someone had strung up a small cable across a dirt road .
We had been riding there many times and always flew down this dirt road.
Well He was flying along as usual and he never saw the cable,it got him right in the neck. The place closed up shortly after and I never did find out what the outcome was .The rumor at the time was that it took his head right off.
Todd I hope your buddy is ok.I would talk to a lawyer just to get some advise .
I think I know the spot your talking about .Please spread the word around up there.
Im pretty sure my cousins ride there too, they live in your neighborhood.
This f-ing state is getting worse and worse.

Jim,
Let them know , It was off the The main trail heading back over the mountain parralell to the farm.
He was out for a slow ride with the kids ..( lucky him ) , If it were just the boys ... someone would be dead right now, we usually scream up those trails ( because your in your backyard).
at any rate , all of my machines are up for sale .. I'm not into riding in Vietnam. At least those guys were expecting boobytraps..

For the record .. it was across a trail to keep people away from the farm.. quite aways from the farm. This was clearly for the riders .
He was quite a distance from the farm.. we are sure not to ride close to the farm out of respect to the owner and not spook the horses ..But I can only speak for us .. who knows what else is going on there ???

I have seen this happen alot, but when we investigated more, We found out that this time of year they tap trees to make homemade maple syrup. They run plastic line from tree to tree and collect it in a basin. They are doing it the last 2 weeks here. Mostly people with farms make the syrup. Its just an idea. In other cases I have seen actual cable ran across trails. It is illegal to run cable without ribbons across anything that resembles a trail, your property or not. Hope he gets better - JT

Were you riding in the sand pits right off Changebridge/202? My mother lives in a condo that ruined that riding area!

The first thing you need your buddy to do, is have someone photograph the area and the wire across the trail. If you can possibly see a structure or building (Farm) from the trails then photograph that also. If you can get it in the back round of the picture with the wire than do it, depending on how close the farm is. Then photograph your buddies injuries. If your buddy decides to fight the land owner or show the police he needs to document this wire and the injuries he sustained with photographs. He will probably swell up and turn black and blue before its over. Make sure you have him take photographs as soon as possible to record his injuries and the bruising that will follow each day. He needs to do this so that he has evidence to prove what happen. Then if he decides to report this to whomever he has proof. Good luck

I Don't think pics will be needed .. The 30+ stitches , lost teeth and medical bills should do the trick.. After long thought .. The horse farm may not be to blame afterall.. there are a few ways this could turn out.. regardless.. someone strung that wire
Stay tuned ....
