I have a Magellan Explorist that is handlebar mounted. It works great, and is easy to use. Not sure if that model is still available. My next GPS will be a Garmin Rhino that way I'll get the walkie talkie feature too. Make sure you get a unit that is shock and water resistant. Another feature would I like is the use of alkaline batteries, pretty hard to find a 110 volt socket to charge your unit whille in the woods for a few days.

As for the handlebar mount I use the Mad Gear universal handlebar mount about $20. It will hold anything, camera, GPS, walkie talkie, cell phone. and it is durable.

Let us know what you get..

I use the Magellen Meridian Gold series which was discontinued a few years ago. That one I have the handlebar mount and uses regular AA batteries. I find a decent run time using NiMH batteries although the battery level never shows fully charged compared to alkalines.

I also have the 12 volt adapter for the unit so the ATV powers it.

I also purchased the Explorist 400 series when Sam's club had a good sale going on. That unit I had problems with and their support is horrible. It took over 8 months to resolve it! Thankfully I bought the unit as a spare and didn't really need it. I don't have a handlebar mount for this one.

Once these units break, I will be looking at Garmin.

GPS units come with all different kind of features. You have to look at what your needs are and then go from there. My main uses for one is exploring and abandoned railroad mapping so being able to communicate with a computer and mapping software was first. These units I have allow uploading topographical and street level data to a memory card that is displayed on screen. That has been very helpful riding since you can get a sense of the terrain up ahead based on the topo data.

I am sure the newer units out there are far more sophisticated then the one I have. Many of them now have color screens.
