my Honda is three years old and has been flawless ... two of my buddies have 03s and two have 04s ... all have been trouble free ... as with any 400EX, if you power shift and don't use the clutch, you can kiss third grear goodbye !!! you bought a nice bike, enjoy it

Clutch, what clutch

I keep hearing about this this stuff but it seems to just shift without it

Actually there are several riders I know with first year 400ex's (1999) that have had zero problems.

Just change the oil, keep the ari filter clean and wash it down after riding then apply some kind of lube or protectant to everything and you shouldnt have any problems.

Oh yea and try not to crash hard that hurts you and the quad
