Exclamation 02 Recon 250es stalls

after some light riding and a distinct backfire, my Recon will start and idle high (usually idles low), but if any throttle is given it immediately stalls. this condition did not immediately follow the backfire- it was ridden 15 more minutes before it started bogging under throttle. I changed from normal to reserve, same issue. exact same thing happens if i pull the choke while it's idling. yes, there's plenty of fuel in the tank. Air flow is unrestricted. If i let it idle for a few mins, then apply throttle it seems like it had saved up some gas and revs up until it runs out in about 2 seconds. then its back to stalling every time i get above the now-high idle. any troubleshooting suggestions? i can't afford to take it to someone right now so i must learn...
any help diagnosing greatly appreciated.

is there any shops around that do work on recons? if so , i would just ask them what it might be, maybe they can point you in the right direction?

Thats what i did with my recon when it poured gas down the crank case and shot it into my air filter box
