The later year KFX400s have increased compression and different camshafts which make a very noticeable difference. The KFX400 also recieved piggy back reservior front shocks those same years. If you're KFX doesn't have the piggy backs, then you also need to increase the compression. It's very likley all you need to do to incrase this compression is change to a thinner base gasket, but make sure you do this research yourself.
With ATVs, I've always felt that upgrade money was best spent on suspension and handling improvements. If you're riding with the wrong tires, that's clearly the first thing you need to change.[/b]

Z400 engines can be upgraded easily and cheaply. The DRZ400 is the dirt bike version. It of course has higher compression, better cams and a much better carb. The compression is from the base gasket (easy). Z400s are probably the best handling sport quad (notice I did not say high perf quad). If you do not like the handling, it is probably due to ridiculous rear tires with too much air and improperly setup suspension. I can step off my banshee and onto a Z400 and just be happy with how much better it handles. Sure the power isnt as crazy, but I doubt it even matters in most of the trail situations we ride. There werent a whole lot of spots where you could top out any sport quad at Quadfest (except those fire roads).
If you are topped out 1-2-3, you should probably keep shifting to 4 and 5!

Check out z400central.com. When I had my Z400 back in 03 they already had them figured out. You could also check out thumpertalk.com and look at DRZ stuff. Just hang low there, they dont like our kind!

If the kfx has less power than a DRZ, I can see where you may want the cam. But all the information above is good. Get the suspension, and tires set up, and you'll be happy. With a proper set up quad, you will run faster for longer time since it won't beat the crap out of you.
IMO most people that want more power really don't need it. The more power is used as a crutch sometimes, and other times it actually makes the machine harder to ride. Just keep that in mind.
Like everyone said, get the quad dialed in, and you'll be amazed at how much faster you can go.
If your goal is purely straight line speed, then yes you need more power. Then theres the cost to power factor, it may actually cost the same to upgrade the quad depending on your goal.
The end goal should be something fun to ride for you. Fast doesn't = fun all the time. Don't confuse the two.
Also, don't forget... you will never, ever ever have the fastest vehicle. There will always be someone faster. This goes for quads, cars, trucks, you name it. Unless you have an unlimited budget, its not worth it.
