Thumbs up

my nephew has a polaris sportsman 90 with oil injection the dealer says you have to use polaris (brand) oil or the warranty will be void. this is a synthetic type oil i just dont see what makes their oil any better than what i can buy @ my local shop or @ NAPA . my guess is that all manufactures will recomend their brand replacement parts in your owners manual but can there be that big a difference in oil? any input would be greatly appreciated as there is an inpatient kid out there with no 2 cycle oil and wants to ride real bad !

Hey Mark, in my experience(i'm and ase cert. auto tech.) I have found that oil is oil is oil. All manufacturers want you to use there products of course. Only downside is that they are usually more money. All oil has to pass the same govt. testing in order to be sold. Whether it be polaris or penzoil, or mobil 1. They all get tested the same. If the owners manual calls for 2 cycle syn. thats what I would stick with. But as far as it voiding the warranty, the dealer would have to send the oil out and get it analized, and I doubt they would go to that measure. So I recommened using whatever you can afford. Just make sure that it is the correct type and weight for your machine. Hope this helps.

Well, I'm a Ford trained factory technician, ASE certified, and also work in a nationally known parts store as a manager. All oil is not created equal. Yes they do get tested to meet certain requirements and those are listed on the back of the oil bottle in the little round donut. In your owners manual it will tell you what grade they want you to use... As long as that oil meets that grade, and requirements, they technically can't void your warranty. Now, the oil Polaris sells has been designed and approved for your "Polaris" vehicle. You certainly can't go wrong with using it. I prefer Bel-Ray myself... but I have some Honda 2 stroke oil now and it works great. Certain oils are designed to do certain things. Like all internal combustion engine oil is designed for internal combustion engines.... each manufacturer also has their own "concoction" of additives that they put in. Now you shouldn't use regular motor oil in a 4 stroke crankcase... even if it's the same weight. You need motorcycle oil because motor oil is not designed to work in a transmission. It isn't designed with the same shear properties as motorcycle oil is, and therefore will wear your gears faster. And as far as dealerships not "bothering" to send your oil out... I've seen it done! If there's a question about it, they most certainly will. And motorcycle dealers seem to be a lot pickier about what they cover under warranty than auto dealerships.

Just my .02 and 11 years experience talking though.

isn't that what I said? Use the correct oil for your bike. Weight, viscosity, etc. Name brand shouldn't make a difference. Sycoholic, What was the instance that you saw your dealer send out oil for analizing? Was the car almost out of warranty? Was the cust. breaking balls?

Just my 15 years of experience, asking. I've never seen that happen.

Just giving a second opinion......not breaking balls.....

Ford and Dodge.... and I've seen them deny warranty for using Group 7 oil filters as well. Don't know if there were previous problems with customer, but a lot of times it's aftermarket warranty companies.

Ive seen test of motor oil, where the oil is rated at a given weight (Ex. 10w-30), now they take a name brand oil, and a "bargain" oil and run them thru a use cycle(maybe 3000 miles) and remove them and test. The data i saw was remarkable, the name brand(it was penzoil) came out with a 10% varience(9w-27), the "bargain" brand was 40%(6w-18). Personally, it seems to me that there is no BARGAIN in "bargain" oil. I have also seen people send out oil if there is a question, we do it where i work to verify they are not ripping us off on quality of oil( i work maintaining a fleet of heavy equipment).

I own a Polaris 2-stroke, and all i can say is you cant go wrong with the Polaris oil. I tried Bel-ray and was not happy, not only did it smoke more, but it also fouled my plug(i did use the oil for injection). Id go with the Polaris stuff, at $8 a quart it is a "bargain" if you ask me.

While we are dropping acomplishments..

ASE Heavy/Med truck Certified

Iv only been doing this for 15 yrs...so im still a youngin..LOL

Just a thought.... they might tell you that the oil is made by Havoline, Valvoline, etc.... but it's not the same product that goes into the name brand bottles. It's just like when you buy an engine from East Coast ATV, Evernham (or insert your motorsport here), it's not the same thing they run... Oil companies spend millions developing their own "special formula" and arent gonna give it generic labeling and sell it for .98 a quart. I will meet the specs on the bottle, but it's not going to go the extra mile.
