Please HELP!! I need your expert opinions & advice! I recently purchased a 1996 Sportsman 400 4x4. It's in Great condition except the engine is bad & needs a bottom & top end rebuild. I was told it would cost me around $800-$1000 to repair this motor. I found a complete 2004 Sportsman 400 engine w/ clutch & cover with approx. 45 hrs on it for a good price! Can you guys tell me if this engine will bolt, fit & work properly in my 96 Sportsman without any modifications? I am also worried about the engine wiring connectors matching up to my stock harness!

Any feedback or advice would greatly be appreaciated!!
Thanks!!
Jerry L.

hi jerry, in my opinion i would stay with the old engine and give it what it needs.
that would keep the bike original and also u would know that the engine is fresh and the bike is still stock. unless ofcourse u doint have the buckos and yer getting the motor really cheep.

Thanks jmo for your input! I hear what your are saying...I would love to keep the original engine but the cost to repair is swaying me towards the 2004 motor. The price is right and it is a good emgine. I just need to know modifacations are needed to make this swap work!

Isn't the engine on your ATV really, really, really simple?

I'm under the impression it's an air cooled two stroke. That's simple in itself. If you then consider that you don't have a gearbox integrated into the engine cases, it sounds like a cake walk!

Maybe you should consider saving money by removing the engine yourself and just dropping it off at your dealer? For your reference, a crankshaft assembly and piston for my YFZ450 costs about $350 (parts alone).

Good advice...Thanks! My dealer quoted me $800.00 for a total rebuild if I deliver the motor! I really can't afford to come out of my pocket right now with Christmas and all!
Can anyone out there tell me if this swap will work without too many modifications?

YFZ Guy thanks again for your input! I am going to rebuild my stock engine! Can you tell me if the 400 Sportsman & 400 Scrambler share the same crank?
Thanks Man!
