I'm getting insurance on my 98 king quad.
Any idea what paperwork I need to bring to NJ DMV to register the quad ?
I have the certificate of origin that was assigned to the previous owner (but nothing filled out on the back assigning it to me_)and a receipt from purchasing it from a dealer in PA ?
The other issue with teh CO is that it has a lein holder listed on the back and no where on it is it stamped Lein satisfied. But logic to me says that the owner would not be in posession of the CO if the loan was not paid. I'm under the impression that the leinholder retains physical posession of the CO til the load in paid off. But then again, Logic does not always work at DMV.
Thanks,
Nick

The dealer you bought it from should have provided you with the proper documents - what county in N.J. do you live - I have registered 4 quads in this rotten state and each time has been a different nightmare - definitly make sure the title you were given is filled out properly both back and front - have your insurance info. and say a prayer - p.s. - somerville MV has a gotten much better at accomplishing this task - Washington MV is not bad but still a bit confused - good luck - you can also check out the NJDMV website - there is a bit of info. there

I am in Hunterdon County I am close to the washington DMV, maybe I'll just stop down there and ask them, I purchased the ATV from a dealer in PA. So I'm guessing he would have no clue on how to register it in NJ. He pretty much handed me the CO and a recepiet for the money I paid.

The dealer in PA did it correctly. The state of PA does not have titles nor registration for atvs. The only reg you can get is through the DCNR which most of us have. All that is required is a notarized bill of sale. NJ will accept the notarized bill of sale from the dealer as proof of ownership. You will have to pay NJ sales tax on the atv due to the fact you bought it in PA.
also - If you have a NJ title from the PA dealer, it could cause you some headaches. That title became void when the atv was sold to the dealer in PA.
I am a NJ notary if you run into a wall with DMV......

I would question that CO as there should be a paid stamp on it or a new co with no lien holders I assume you would need the co in PA to register it that is why the person had one with lien...

Nick,
Forget about the Certificate of Origin. NJ DMV doesn't care about it nor do they ask you for it. I've been down this road many times. All you need is a notarized bill of sale that includes the Model, Make, Year, Vin #, Date of sale - ( make it recently) Purchase price -(lower means cheaper tax), your name and address along with the sellers name and address on a piece of paper with both your signatures. If you cant get the previous owners info, then have your buddy sell it to you . I've been through this many times with atv's and trailers. It works everytime.

Nick, again, I am a notary if you get hung up with DMV. I am always willing to try and help anyone who is trying to stay legal.

My advice:
SCREW NJ!
Register in PA. It is 1/2 the cost. You won't have to pay the NJ tax. Best of all, you won't be supporting the azzhat government of NJ!
