i got a kfx 400 last july, used, but in good shape... ive only got to ride it a few times cause i just got out of the army, but ive been out alot in the last few weeks, and i talked my boy into buying a kaw kfx 700 vtwin. his came modded out completely, im talking full skids, a arms, engine, swing arm, plus it had taper pro bars, a dynotech ignition, dg nerf bars, fully piped, a trail tech speedometer/everything else under the sun digital display, holeshot xct tires, itp rims, i mean the list gos on and on. of course i was jealous because i got him into the game, and his ride is more pimped than mine. so i went on a shopping spree, got some holeshot hd tires, pro taper bars, moose control protectors, a white brothers carbon pro full exhaust, dg nerf bars.... wich i might add are a *beep* to install, and some other miscelaneous crap. im just trying to figure out what i should go with next...... should i get a swing arm skid plate, or an engine skid plate? is there anything else i should look at before that? let me know what you think

a good stearing dampner is one of the best things i have on my 450...Next would be getting the shocks reworked...But I am assuming the kawi 400 is still the same as the zuki, and the one I rode needed a regear...And I hope you rejetted for that pipe..An air filter to complement that pipe....Skids are depending where your riding...Oh and I think its the 400's that have the water pump housing problems..the antifreeze is eating them so you may want to look into that..theres alot of things you can do,just depends on what your going to do with it...no sense getting something if your not going to use it like it should be..

In my opinion an engine skid plate isn't nearly as important as a swingarm skid.

My two biggest concerns with the KFX400 is the seat height and gearing. In my opinion, the 400s are way too prone to tipping over. My guess is they're comming with too long of a rear spring. It's also very common to put a 1-tooth smaller front sprocket on there because the gearing is too tall.

Superchicken is right, the later 400s came with a magneseum "Mg" right side engine cover which rots out behind the water pump. Ethylene Glycol coolant will corrode right through the water pump housing and spill into the crankcase. You need to change the coolant or change the right side engine cover.

I wouldn't do too much else to that ATV until you do some more riding.

alrighty....... i got so much feedback..... well, i decided to go with the swingarm skid........ and the engine skid. said the heck with it, bought both, and ordered new brakes all the way around. i think im gonna call it quits on modding for a while. once i get tired of it, cause its not fast enough or whatever, im gonna leave it how it is. as far as rejetting, well, i didnt do it..... but there was a reason. the pipe came with a new white brothers air filter, and it also came with jetting specs. it said that as long as im running the quad with the air filter box and lid still on, then they recomend the factory jets. if i were to remove the lid or drill it out at all, then i should replace the main jet with the one they provided. i use the quad for trails and just having fun, climbimg hills every now and then, not for anything in particular though, and i know i havent rode alot in the last year, but im no cherry, i rode utilitys alot when i was a kid, and i regrasped everything i learned then the first time i got on this atv. but any more suggestions you guys have would be great, especially tips on this engine cover issue, or coolant swap.
