from what i've heard on a 2 stroke the first major work needed is an upper end rebuild due to piston ring/cylinder failer resulting in low compression. also to the best of my knowledge when replacing rings you should always hone the cylinder?????

that is correct..a bad ring,be it worn or broke will cause low compression...then any damadge to the piston like a broken ring land or a hole burned in the middle due to detonating will do it also...are you having a problem with a specific bike?
