Oily spark plug? How long/old is the plug? Smoke from the exhaust? If it is blue, then you are definitely burning oil...if it is black then your carb is set too rich (too much fuel) or you have a dirty air cleaner. Are you having to add oil often? If your sparkplug is "oily" in appearance rather than "sooty-black" then you could have bad valve-guide seals.

my suggestion to both of you is do the tear down now ... you may be able to prevent major damage before it happens ... why take a chance on broken pieces getting into the crank, then ruining case ... a quality piston, pin, rings, surclips, gaskets, oil & filter will run you under $200.00 (parts, no labor) ... if the cylinder needs to be bored, it runs $60.00 ... if funds allow, I highly recommend sending the cylinder head out to me inspected for flatness, and cracks ... the shop can also check for proper valve stem to guide clearances ... I used Country Cycles in Jackson ... Curt knows his business ... if you're interested, PM me and I'll supply their phone number ... like the monkey in the Fram commercial said, "you can pay me a little now, or you can pay me a lot later" ... why take a chance on your bike failing out on a trail, miles from your trailer ... instead of looking for "cheap" or "bargain" parts, why not call Pat at Cycle Addicts ... I'm sure he can help you ... remember, TRY and support those that support you ... it's only common sense
