98 Lem Morini 50cc.
Can you adjust timing on these things?
Will only give a puff when I give it a shot of ether!

I'm going to guess this is a two stroke and you should avoid using ether. It will create combustion but at the same time it will strip the lubricant from the cylinder and cause you to score your piston. As far as your problem I would need a little more info like when it started to happen what have you checked, how did it run prior to this no start condition? There are many things that will cause a motor not to start.

I will avoid the ether, but I needed to know if it would fire.
Getting spark. (just replaced ignition coil & spark plug.)
getting gas.
Checked exaust for blockage.
I inherted the machine, I've never had it running.
Thanks.

OK, you have fuel and spark. Do you have compression?

Well fuel, air, compression and spark should egual combustion and therefore it should be running, but we are not sure about the air flow (it wasnt mentioned) so be sure that its getting enough air and the filter isnt clogged up or what ever.

The other thing that came to mind is how so many people think they have compression when they really dont. Sure it could be enough to produce back pressure on a kick start (and that can even be from mech problems between the piston and wall etc) but still not enough for it to run. So be sure to use a decent quality mechanical compression guage and lets hear what it is producing. Also wouldnt be a bad idea to find out what the mfg recomends as a min either.

If I was in your position and all the basics check out I would be pulling the cylinder real quick since its a two stroke and really easy. That way you can be sure there are not any other problems internal, but most would effect the compression test also.

Either way good luck and keep us posted on your findings.

in place of startin fluid for 2 strokes, tahe an onld windex bottle, clean it out real good, and pour your mix gas in there. spray it into your air filter. it works the same, and still ahs the oil in there.
