Although i would use the feed from the indicator light to power a relay. A large back-up light may overload the small wire that is the feed for the light. If anyone is interested in a wiring diagram for this i can send one i drew.
I like the relay idea and got all the stuff this weekend. but the kodiak's console is a sealed box so I cant see what wire connects to the reverse indicator light. I unplugged it and using a tester tried to figure out what wire goes hot when in reverse but of course it doesnt seem to be as simple as that. I'm thinking if I want to do this i'm probably going to have to try to get ahold of a shop manual which i hope would give details about the wiring. any other ideas?

You should be about to trace the wire back to the wiring harness. I would put the relay on too. I am sure the wire will burn if you hook up the light directly to the small wire.
