Never had any trouble with the Sportsman 500 starting until yesterday. I can turn the key on and press the start button and all power will shut down (lights, winch, and digital speedometer reading). It's not the battery because the winch will still work. Any suggestions on what could be the problem? I was thinking maybe start switch or starter solenoid is bad, but I am not an atv mechanic.

check the voltage of the battery first ....it can wreak havoc if it has a shorted cell

check starter also ...jump it to crank if possible ....starter switch and solenoid are also good places to start..

This topic moved by me, from General Discussion to ATV Troubleshooting.

Thanks, and good luck!

I've experienced this problem before. Once a cell was damaged due to the battery getting loose in it's compartment. The battery had enough current to crank the electric starter, but didn't have enough voltage to make the CDI module come to life.
