i just got a 2000 blaster and kinda unfamiliar with quads and sheet, ive always been into cars/trucks racing, wheeling that kinda stuff...anyway the question is about a sound, it sounds like a knocking sound sorta from the motor, the quad runs great, but it's just that sound that makes me think something is wrong, but the dude i got it from says that's just the way they sound, i have no reason not to believe him, just wanted another opinion on it
thanks in advance

Octane booster to hide a KNOCK? Listen, I'm more of a car guy then quad, but somehow this doesnt sound like "sound advice" if you'll pardon the pun.
Its like "You hear that noise? Turn up the radio louder.... there, its gone now".

PS- I moved this post here to Technical..... thankyou!

na, just use a higher octane gas, i think it even say that in the severice manual.
i run octane boster for extra power on top of high octane.

1. use higher octane, or better quality gas
2.check spark plug heat range.
3. incorrect carb jetting
4.faulty CDI unit.
also check engine mounts, and u should have pieces of rubber between your cooling fins, to lower noise, and viberation

1) If your running a stock exhaust, the knocking noise is definitely always going to be there..It's nothing to worry about...it's not like a car engine.
2) You should always use High Octane gas...or whenever you can...if it's stock, you don't need to use additives.
it's just the way it runs...but never "lug" the motor...if your losing power, just down shift..you can rev the sheet out out of the motor..it's better to rev it high, than "lug" it...
Ride it like you stole it is the way to ride any two stroke!

Keyword is "Fresh Head"....usually that means they shaved it to get it flat again..when you shave it, you increase compression....when you increase compression, you need to run higher octane gas...this could be the problem.

If the piston is worn, you might be hearing piston slap. You're not really going to hear piston slap much above 2000 rpms. Piston slap is easiest to hear at idle. It's not uncommon for a 2-stroke to demonstrate this problem when it's worn since 2-strokes often wear down piston skirts and/or oval out cylinders. Once part of the piston skirt breaks off, you'll know a worn piston/bore was to blame.
On the other hand, pinging/detonation is something you hear while the engine is under load and it appears consistently at the same engine speed every time. Normally, it happens during acceleration or generally when the engine is under load and not at higher rpms. You'll also notice it more in higher gears because the load on the engine is greater and the engine RPMs accelerate more slowly, spending more time at the offending RPMs. It's my impression that engines that demonstrate pinging can live long lives as long as they're not constantly run at the RPMs and loads that demonstrate the pinging.
Detonation is usually caused by too much ignition advance or too low octane. It can also be caused by an improperly modified squish area in the head or improperly designed (or matched) exhaust chamber. These last two causes are very, very unlikely unless you have an experimental exhaust pipe or recently had the head reshaped.
Personally, I've never heard pinging from an air-cooled engine, but I suspect it's louder than what I've heard from liquid cooled engines. It sounds like there's a pebble bouncing around on top of the piston and is the result of a shock wave that stresses the mechanical parts of your engine including the crankshaft, piston, and everything in between.
Here's what detonation can do to a piston: piston Those bits of piston are fuzed to the piston crown from the heat that was produced.
