Okay experts!

I have a dilema here....One of my exhaust studs snapped....I drilled it out...now I need to tap it out...

I bought a new tap, but it looks like the hole that needs to be tapped out is not deep enough, by the time it bottoms out, only 1 or two threads are going to be there...DO they make special taps for this type of situation?

If anyone is interested, and has the tool, I be willing to pay you to do it.....

Any input is appreciated...

You need a bottom tap. It has less of a cutter on the tip and more thread near tip. You can modify a regular tape to do this by cutting off most of the tapered part of the of the tape and rounding it with a grinder. What size thread ? Did you get all of the stud out of the hole? This is important before retaping.

Yeah, I'm about 99% sure I drilled the entire stud out...Before I try to tap it, I'll be 100% sure....My problem was a little piece of the EZ-Out was in there...But I think I got it...

The orginal stud is 6mm....I found "grade 5" 5/16 studs....so I bought a 5/16 tap...My next question is what size drill bit should I use for the tap? The package indicates "F"....

I'm really thinking this might be a job for a professional....

For a 5/16-18 tap, an "F" (.2570) drill is correct.

That's the answer. I've had to buy those in the past.
