Action Yamaha says that factory Yamaha has been getting complaints from dealers on the east coast suggesting that fuels in our area are to blame for stuck float needles. Aparently with the high gas prices, some suppliers are increasing the quantity of less-expensive additives in their fuel. This fuel, can cause the float needle in our carburetors to corrode and become stuck over time.
I discovered this for myself while helping a friend of mine diagnose a problem with his Raptor. Both float needles were siezed shut in each of his carburetors. They were so tight we needed a screwdriver to pry them out! The odd thing is, each needle had a rough texture to it and there was no evidence of the fuel changing to varnish!
He filled up his Raptor and did some riding back in June. He let the ATV sit for a number of weeks before when we discovered this fuel problem. It turns out his friend encountered the same problem on his ATV. Both guys purchased fuel on the same day.
Keep in mind fuel stabilizer may not prevent this corrosion! If you're concerned you've purchased corrosive fuel, turn your fuel petcock off and drain the carburetor bowl after each day until you start using more trustworthy fuel. If I find out where the fuel was purchased, I'll post that at a later time.
I hope this helps some of you avoid this problem.
