Thumbs up

This summer I bought a Honda Fourtrax 300, a 96 model.

Since the temperatures have started getting colder I can hear a knocking noise when I accelerate when the engine is cold. The noise changes to more like a loud tick after the engine is warmed up.

With the engine cold I can put it in gear and hold the brake while advancing the throttle and the noise will go away as the rpm is increased.

My question , is this noise in the centrifugal clutch? Is this why it goes away as the speed is increased?

All advise would be greatly appreciated.

Is this the 300ex model or another 300cc model? You mentioned centrifigal clutch, but I know the 300ex doesn't have one.

Does the ATV have to be moving for the sounds to appear or can they be observed with the transmission in neutral?

I'm trying to get the impression whether this is a "tapping" sound you get before oil gets to the valve train, or whether it's a connecting rod bearing problem, or whether it's a trnsmission/drivetrain issue.

The 300ex doesn't have a centrifigal clutch.

The noise is more than likely valves, Its a Honda bullet proof but you need to adjust the valves more often tham other makes especially when they get older. The seems to go away with rpm because you are floating the valves more and taking up the slop.

I've heard some hondas sound like a rod knock beause they were so far out. Not a good thing adjust them ASAP.

Adjust them cold, usually .004 intake - .005 exhaust.

Thanks, for all the replies. Will check the valves, wondered about them but the noise sounded like it was deeper.

will check this out this weekend and let you know.

thanks again
