:rider: while riding up hill, the atv coughed like it was running out of gas -(1/2 full tank) when leveled off, it stopped. While trying to start it it backfired once and has not fired since. I drained all gas, installed dry gas, fresh gas and changed plug. It still won't start. What is the problem?

It could be the float in the carb is stuck shut and you are not getting any gas. Try this first, spray a little bit of starting fluid into your air box and see if it fires up. If it does, then it's the carb. If it doesn't fire up than you might have a timing issue or even electrical.

Let me know if that helps.

John,
I appreciate you taking the time to think my problem through. I have tried starting fluid, and I have tried spraying carb. cleaner. I did get a backfire, which makes me think it is a timing issue. I have never had any problems of any kind. I bought the atv new and it has only 490 hrs on it. I realize that doesn't mean anything, but it was strange the way it acted when it stopped. just as though it ran out of gas. I believe I am at the end of my things to check. I may take it to a pro and let them check it tomorrow. I will give it one more try though. I did think that maybe it iced up or I got some dirty gas. The weather was in the 20s at the time. I can't find a fuel filter though. Do you know where one could be located?

Thanks
Bob
