Dear everyone,

I recently was riding and it was about 2 degrees out and for the first time i had problems with my quad.....first i went through water and i starting having a bad misfire for about 5 mins and then it went away...however the whole time the bike would idle...then i went to ride the next day and could not get the bike to start...was getting air, fuel, but no spark to the sparkplug boot....i later worked on it in a heated garage and it started right up...then i left it outside in the cold and it would not start again.....people suggest that it is the CDI or coil...ive looked into replacing the CDi and they are expensive through Yamaha..anyone know anything about aftermarket CDIs? Is that even the problem? im afraid to ride and get stuck.....thank you for your help

I would pull off the stator side cover and check for water,99% sure thats your problem, yamys have that problem like mine.water gets in there and wets the stator.

Unhappy

Ive heard that yamahas 9/10 it is the stator which gives electrical problems, but i though that the stator acted as a alternator and just recharged the battery as you rode? Also, would the stator being wet allow the bike not to turn over the next day? Its jsut odd that when i took the cdi off and put it in room temp heat, it turned the bike over when i reconnected the plugs right away...

Now when you say turn over do you mean the engine physicly turn over or wont start?I have seen enough water in the side covers that in cold weather it is like a frozen chunk of ice in there

the stator does infact generate the electricty for your ignition, but it also has the magnetic pic up that is triggered by the fly wheel weights that fire your spark. If there is moisture in there it will run like poo.Its free to pull off the side cover, cus the gasket is more like an oring thats reusible.while your in there spray some wd-40 all over the fly wheel and behind it.It wont hurt the electrics at all.

I didn't think this was possible on 4-stroke bikes. Don't all four-stroke motorcycle engines have oil around the stator that's shared with the crankcase? Two-strokes have dry stator/flywheel cavities.

I am new at atv repair and im not 100% sure but i know the oil for a four stroke engine does enter the crankcase and i beleive is circulated trhough the entire motor, however i am not sure if that includes the stator...i would believe so since it is located right next to the flywheel.....that could also mean something new then...if im getting water in my stator then i could be getting water in my motor oil right? Also is there a way to test the stator with a volt meter to see if it is producing the proper amount of current?

And yes the first time the engine would crank but not turnover...when i took it into my garage and removed the cdi and brought that to room temperature and reconnected the cdi unit the bike turnovered and was running beatifully....i also tried jumping the bike when i was out at the trails and the bike still would not turnover...it would only crank....

My Suzuki quadsport had the stator and flywheel in oil.

My Honda 250x and 350x have a dry flywheel and stator housing, why I dont know And yes water does get in there sometimes if I go in deep puddles etc.. :

So there's a crankshaft seal on the left side of the crankshaft? I'm guessing the camshaft chain must be on the right-hand side of the crankshaft; am I correct?
