Unhappy

Hi to all, I am new to the ATV thing , my grandson has one and it went down yesterday. Up to this point in time no troubles (1800 miles) The flooding ? problem does not seem to be the float. I drained carb with tank turned off and then refilled carb and no leakage. I removed spark plug and dried cylinder, lots of gas , installed new plug and the thing started. sounded bad and smoked (white) then the R lite(reverse shift lite) began flashing. The unit was in park with park lite on. I tested the compression and came up eith 122 lbs. Need help badly, live far from anywhere.
Thanks for any help. Bill

Hey there, welcome to the 'Zone William!

As for that 450. Truely I'm no technician, but I own that bike, ('04 450) but I can tell you that the warning light you mention, the blinking "R" while in Park, is a code/warning light. That light usually signals that the IDLE is too high, or more likely, he's revving the motor a bit high after he starts it.

Smoke: could be too much fuel in the cylinder during all this troubleshooting too, unsure. Still doing it?? Kodiaks have a habit of eating oil normally too, then, if you fail to check it, it'll bite you with a to end rebuild ( ).

Judging by your troubleshooting, it sounds like you've eliminated the starter, and battery and that area then, correct? Kodiaks and Bruins are a bit notorious for going through batterys, and quite a few left the factory with a bad cell in them.

One more Kodiak thing to check too, if its an 04, (straight axle rear susp, not independent), be sure to check the rear "swingarm" for cracks!!! Circled in RED.

Mines cracked clean through to underneath at the moment. Just one more thing to keep an eye out for...

Good luck, hang in there, you'll get more replies here!

I assume the plug is good??? take a closer look at your float adjustment and or possibly needle/seat worn and not sealing when the float is up.Has anyone screwed around with the mixture screws, make sure they are set right too. as for that That R lite??? my dad has an 04 kodiac. the dealer told him that was normal, seems kind of odd and someday I would like to learn the real reason why it does that.

That is correct...its telling you its reving to high for safe shifting or its not warmed up yet,for the amount of rpm's....thats what i found online about it...As for the smoking, make sure the air filters clean and the plug is ok...the compression seems,ok...by the way were DO you live???

Question

Hi to all, thanks for response. I live in Magdalena,New Mexico. I have tried all normal things to try. The lite explanation makes since . I located a control box? where the fuse box is located. Is this the engine control box ? I am trying to locate a service manual for this machine . I have all body panels removed and won't reassemble until I have manual. This might sound strange but when I do get the engine running it sounds like a twin cylinder with one cylinder dead. I seem to have excessive blow by and with filter(air) removed it seems as though I have a slight blow back from intake. I hope this is not true . Again thanks for all the help. Bill

122 psi sounds a little low to me. Does this indicate a problem in itself, or is this normal for this type of ATV?

my 07 450 runs the same, minus the smoke. the manual says the r light blinking could mean speed sensor. if you have fixed yours i would love to know.
