After going through a small mud hole it would run great but would not idle for about 3 or 4 minutes. went through the usuall stuff with electrical connections and dielectric grease and carb cleaning. If you spray the cylinder and head with the hose it will stall and not idle for about 2 minutes, but will run great and start right up every time.
This problem just started recently.
Any ideas?

What do you mean by "would not idle for minutes"? Are you saying after 4 minutes it would idle reliably, or it will idle for a minute or two then die out unless you give it throttle?

Did you put a tach on it to see whether the ide is too low?

When you cleaned the carburetor, did you remove the fuel or air adjustment screw, clean inside the hole, then return the screw to its original position? This is an area of all ATV carburetors that should not be over looked when you clean a carburetor since it ties into the narrowest fuel circuit in the carb.

You might want to run a little alcahol though the fuel system.

There's a possibility you did some top end damage and the engine is a little low on compression. Two-strokes often will not idle reliably when the rings are worn, but I don't know if this happens on four strokes too.

If you go through a 200 foot long mud hole, it has no problem. its when you come out and let off the gas it dies. it will start right up but if you let off the gas it will die. this condition of no idle will remain for about 2 minutes. then it will be ok.
This is not a electrical issue and no water is getting into the air filter box.

At home it will run and idle fine all day if you dont get it wet.

However if you let a garden hose run onto the head and cylinder it will die in 20 seconds then not idle again for 2 minutes.

This is a cold running engine, by that I mean...on a hot day if you shut it off, after 5 minutes you try to start it you have to use the choke! also you allways have to give it a little throttle to get it to start.

Do you think that the cold water running on the engine is enough to cool it to a point that it needs the choke?

update....
if you trickle cold water on the valve cover it will stall within 5 seconds,
however if you trickle hot water on the valve cover it will still idle with no problem.
gonna check compression and valve clearances tonite

ok, beings the suspense is killing you all.....
it was a tight intake valve!
does not need the choke any more to start.
also does not need any throttle to start.
and now has twice the power!
