hey mike i have a 93 timberwolf that i was just having the same problems with. It has always had a hard time cold starting and idling. But this time it WOULD NOT START.. so here's my fix- took the carb apart, all the jets, needles and valves out, removed the float and drained all the old gas out... filled a small plastic container about half way full of carb cleaner. Took all rubber o'rings off the carb and set them aside and set the carb and all the pieces into the container. Let them sit and soak in carb cleaner for about 2 hours. In the meantime i put a new spark plug in and checked the air filter. Took the carb out and ragged out all the varnish from the reservoir and from the main port. Took each jet and held them up to the light to make sure i could see at least a small hole. Put the whole thing back together, installed it back onto the quad. The thing started right up. Runs better then it ever has, don't even need the choke on cold starts. Try it Mike you might be amazed.
just a few things to remember-
1. You can check your spark by removing the plug, plugging it in, holding the tip near or against the outside of the motor and WHILE HOLDING THE WIRE, NOT THE PLUG, turn the motor and watch it spark- it should be blue or white and fairly thick.
2. Check your airflow by disconnecting the filter and attempting to start again. You can also put your hand over the air pipe to feel for suction.
3. Be sure not to expose any rubberized gaskets or O'rings in carb cleaner for any period of time, they will disintegrate.
4. If you have a local Yamaha dealer, ask them for a carb diagram printout while your in there, it will help keep track of where everything goes and what each part does.
Good luck let me know if this helped. - Travis
