Thumbs down

I have a 1998 Yamaha Warrior and the switch you use to start it... click it to run then push the start
button seems to stick. As soon as I switch it to run it starts.. And the starter keeps going unless I
manually unplug the connector that connects to the switch (under the lights). The thing is it doesn't
always do it though. I tried contact cleaner..wd40..scraping the contacts... But it doesn't seem to
work..I see used switches all the time on ebay and people are always bidding at them. I was
wondering also if others have had this problem..and if there is any way you can fix it.. or replace the
switch. Can anything else cause it...I ruled out the silinoid by the way. I was going to try and re-
solder the connections to the start button to see if that would work. ANY IDEAS OR
THOUGHTS?!?!?!?

Thanks alot!

I understand what the machine is doing.
Switch it from OFF to RUN and it starts, correct?
Never touching the START button, correct?
Which switch are you cleaning the contacts on?
I hope you have cleaned up BOTH switches.
The OFF/RUN switch and the START button both need to be cleaned
After this is done, report back and let us know.

There are 4 wires that go to the 2 switches, right?
If you cut/disconnect 1 wire to the START button, what happens?

I looked in my clymer manual and can see that there is a brown and a red with a white stripe wire that goes to the start switch (button). So i disconnected the plug for the switch and bent back the red and white one so that it wouldn't make a connection and everything else seemed to work besides the start switch...so what you said worked. Now I figured out that it is indeed the button itself. Is there any way I can fix this...I really sprayed it good with a quality contact cleaner. Can I try re-soldering it??.. I want to try this if it can be fixed rather then dishing out $60 for a new one. Which will eventually have the same problem most likely. Any thoughts? How can I fix the start button. the contacts seem to have pink residue on them...I scraped at them a sprayed them pretty good..but no luck. THANKS!!

$60.00 is that a rip off or what!
How about going to Radio Shack and get a 12 volt momentary button
and hook the 2 wires up to that instead?
It's the same thing except $55.00 cheaper!

Let me know what you find out...

Also if the button is shot I guess trying to re-solder it won't hurt it any.

I figured out what was wrong after un-assembling it and re-assembling the switch several times. The metal piece that the button makes contact to, is shorted out. So even though the button isn't making contact...the metal plate still is on its own. Causing the ATV to start on its own. I tried to clean it up good but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions??? Could I go to Home Depot or Radio Shack and get some kind of outdoor switch. The switch that goes through the opening is 1/4" by 3/4". Can you buy just the plate anywhere....????? Of course not... or can you buy something similar?
