Has anyone here done the kick start mod for the yfz? so far I only looked at the gyt-r kit for $482 . Also does the hot start cable make it manageable to kick over?

You wil save 11 pounds by switching from electric start to kick.

If you remove the battery the weight savings is nice but I read that when the cooling fan comes on it creates some drivability issues. Im thinking of keeping the electric start and just having the kick for back-up. I guess my main concern is ease of starting with the kick due to the high compression ratio.

Trailtech took some measurements and concluded that when the
1. cooling fan is running, and
2. the brake light is on (brakes are engaged), and
3. the engine is at idle,
the YFZ450's generator doesn't generate enough power. The ATV will draw power FROM the battery if ALL these conditions are met.

You can do any of the following to avoid discharging you battery:
a. change your incandescent brake light bult to an 1157 LED replacement
b. change to a 2006 YFZ450 LED brake lamp assembly
c. change to a higher threshold thermoswitch (turns fan on less frequently)
d. avoid long periods of idling with your foot on the brake
